Help me give my students learn social skills through a variety of modalities like the Franklin Learning Center games, music, and a warm comforting classroom environment.
My students are gifted and highly intelligent. They are a delightful bunch with interests as varied as circuit engineering, crafting, and even cycling. Academic learning usually comes easy to them. What does not come easy to them is what has been called the hidden curriculum: social skills, executive functioning, problem solving.
My students have often been compared to Sheldon on The Big Bang Theory.
They are insightful brilliant, yet they often can be oblivious to the simplest social clues of their peers and teachers. This often results in embarrassment, but sometimes even a meltdown. While they are fun loving and have a desire to blend in and make friends, they often feel alienated because interaction with others can challenging to understand.
My Project
Help end the maddening meltdowns and reroute the trail of tears to the principal's office. Provide learning opportunities to my little "Sheldon"ites in a safe and comfortable learning environment.
We are in a time when kids are engrossed in video games.
Learning has to be more than the boring round the table question and answer of yesteryear. Children respond to fun, and why shouldn't learning be fun? The multi varied games selected will not only be amusing and engaging to the child on the spectrum, but they will teach in real time the social skills that my students need to be successful in the classroom on the playground, and in life.
These games, the record player, and even the lamp will spice up an otherwise blah classroom. My social skills lunch groups will become a time of learning enjoyment like know other time! Yes, students may forget to eat their lunch while participating, but they will now leave lunch group with more than the nutrients of the four food groups, they will leave will tools and skills - transforming from the awkward yet amusing, to the charming and capable students that I know they are capable of being!
