The 5th grade students at our school are curious, brilliant and creative learners!
They take advantage of every opportunity given to them.
They love to use modern technological tools to explore ideas. Creative projects - especially those done in small groups - are some of their favorite learning experiences.
They ask a lot of questions and learn best through the discovery of ideas. They need many opportunities to practice finding answers to questions, to make and learn from bold mistakes, and to collaborate in developing projects. These are the skills that will help them be successful in the future!
My Project
Our grade level will be promoting our third annual cycling club next spring to promote this healthy, safe, outdoor activity! We would love to provide each rider with their own set of blinky LED lights to keep bikes visible and safe! These simple LED lights last for a really long time and easily strap onto handlebars and seat posts to illuminate the riders—even in daytime! We know that daytime blinking lights make bikes even more visible to drivers. These lights will serve us as we practice with the club, and be given to students to promote safe riding and use as they ride around town! In our 2nd year last year, we TRIPLED the participants from 16 to over 50! This year we anticipate reaching around fifty once more. The LED lights come in sets of two, so each set provides a front and back light for two riders.
Bicycling is an activity students can enjoy their whole lives, and It is always more fun when we ride together and ride safely!
Our plan is to meet for four weeks—riding during recess—with each week increasing the ride lengths and learning more about safety and mechanics.
On our final week, we'll take one last big lunch big ride around our local lake! We're also inviting an author and our local bicycle police patrol officer. It is a great way to increase awareness and love of cycling in our community!
