Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am the School Counselor so every classroom is my classroom. Every student is my responsibility. They all know me in a positive way through my Bibliotherapy in class guidance lessons. I use children's books to teach themes like bullying, empathy, grief, kindness, and self esteem.
My school is a neighborhood school where many students are proud that their parents and grandparents attended.
Staff and parents work hard to ensure a valuable education that address the whole child. As the School Counselor, I have the privilege of working with all the students through in class guidance lessons. I develop rapport and the students associate the School Counselor as someone who helps all students.
My Project
As the School Counselor, I will use these books and tools to work with whole classes, in small groups, and with individual students. For example, I will use the blindfolds in team building trust walks. I will use the books about self esteem and bullying in whole class lessons. Additionally, I will use examples with parents such as the 5 point scale and the Social Stories book.
As a result of working with students and parents using these tools, students will will improve their cooperation skills, work together better as a team, increase their feelings of self worth, handle bullying, and manage their anger better.
If you want to know about the soul of a school, visit the office of the School Counselor.
The School Counselor must be equipped to handle any situation. With these tools and resources in my tool kit, I will be able to address a wide range of my students' issues. As their social-emotional needs are met, the students will be more successful in their academics.
