My Students

We are a school community in the heart of Seattle bursting with energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity. We are desperately missing each other during the current times as we long to see each other not only to reconnect but to learn together and continue the good work we have started. Our students are curious, compassionate & concerned. Their interests and distresses reflect the different cultures, backgrounds and identities within our community. These kids are motivated and want to continue to be a force of education and positive change.

We are fortunate in that our school library serves as an extension of the classroom and a grand community space to explore our fascinations as well as our worries.

Many of our kids are not able to participate in after school programs and/or do not have the opportunities to pursue given interests outside of school. For these students, it is even more important that the library be a welcoming place to linger, learn and lead.

My Project

As we continue to refine and expand our library collection, we look to the kids to help choose new material. This project will bring over 50 new books to our library as recommended by the students!

The more the kids feel the library reflects their lives and their interests, the more likely the library will be a place of solace, refuge and joy.

Titles selected for this project were determined by book recommendation forms, completed independently by students. While there were certainly some clear preferences (more graphic novels), other requests reflect the varying interests and needs of our students. There were specific title recommendations, a desire for more girl-led adventures, more diverse character representation and more books featuring main characters who identify as LGBTQ+. It is our ultimate goal that our library cradles our community, that it is the heartbeat of our school, and that every student finds not only materials of interest, but stories that reflect their individual experiences, feelings and backgrounds.
