My Students

Over the years, I have studied research about the brain. I have found that music can have an incredible impact on student learning and performance. I used to play music during various student work times, but often times I would have some students that were aggravated and annoyed by the music.

I teach a 4-5 loop in which I keep students for two years during their fourth and fifth grade years.

I currently have 27 students with the average class size being 26-28 students. In our building, we have 2nd-5th graders. Roughly 45% of our students qualify for free and reduced lunches.

My Project

My next task was to individualize the students’ music. I gathered as many portable CD players as I could (I managed to scrounge up about 18 the first year). I applied for a grant that paid for 35 CDs of various kinds (classical that energizes, focuses, calms, white noise, and jazz). Students would try a variety of them until they found one that worked for them. Students are more relaxed and are more focused during work times. They are able to use these during high stakes tests and it helps them not only to focus on their work, but block out any distractions that may have caused them to have a lower performance. Parents have stated that the children work far better on homework when they use the music. Many have purchased the same CDs.

Students can use the MP3 players to help them focus.

They are learning how to learn. I am excited that not only can this help the students for this year, but for future years as well.
