Our school provides a rigorous college preparatory education that equips and empowers students for success in college and in life. We welcome all students including those living with emotional, physical, or other structural disadvantaging factors such as gender, race, or poverty. The population of our inclusive classrooms are 60% general education and 40% students with disabilities.
We strive to build social skills and foster confidence in all students, so our school offers a free after-school fine arts program at the elementary division.
As the after-school drama teacher, I engage 8 to 11 year-olds in the skills necessary to produce a play. My students have learned such skills as creating ensembles, pantomime, character development, listening and blocking, set decoration, and singing and song writing. The children learn to work together and the importance of every player!
As the students perform short plays, write original songs, and perform during our school wide functions such at the Winter Festival and After-school Showcase, I marvel at their growth of self-esteem and confidence. Our end of year productions will be a fractured fairy titled Cinder.....Really. My students are eagerly awaiting to perform on a big stage with real costumes.
My Project
Please help my drama students and I bring "Cinder...Really" to life by the purchase of these costumes. "Cinder...Really" is a fractured fairy tale in which the stepmother and stepsisters are the oppressed drudges and Cinderella is an emboldened drama queen who demands that all her wishes are met. Cinderella's blinged-out ball gown will incentivize her performance as a spoiled brat. Stepmom's and stepsisters Anastasia and Drizella's costumes are less opulent to fit the characters oppressed natures. In our play, the hamsters are turned into unicorns who pull the pumpkin coach to the prince's ball. In the end, karma gets Cinderella whose coach turns back to a pumpkin and the unicorns turn back to hamsters who attack Prince Charming in his resplendent costume.
The students are so looking forward to wearing real costumes to enhance their performances.
By having these costumes and props, great boosts will be provided to their confidence and embellish their performances.
