Some of my students have experienced trauma so significant that it impacts them daily in the classroom. Some students are so crippled by anxiety that they feel overwhelmed just walking into class. All of the students who enter my office are seeking healing in one way or another. This healing will help them to succeed in the classroom and at home.
My students are fighters; they keep trying no matter what life throws at them.
They persevere through their trauma. They sit in class and do their best to beat the anxiety or depression that bogs them down. They are fighters. My job is to help them learn how to be resilient and heal the right way so they can become successful happy adults.
The school I work in has a wide dynamic of students. A large portion of my students are economically disadvantaged and cannot afford any professional emotional help outside of school. A large portion of my students fall into ethnic minorities and do a great job at blending the culture of their family and our society together. I aim to help every student while being culturally sensitive and empowering them with the tools they already possess.
My Project
I encountered this bi-tapping product recently at a conference and felt like it would be an incredible tool during times of crisis, heightened emotions, and helping students understand how important it is to use our bodies to help us cope and heal. The product includes two small hand held devices that alternate vibrations. Bi-Tapp (Bilateral Tapping) incorporates an understanding of how our brain works in moments of heightened stress and anxiety.
Bi-Tapp accesses our natural ability to calm our nervous system down and is one of the easiest ways to assist us in returning to our optimal level of functioning.
When a student is unable to calm themselves down, this will be an excellent way to de-escalate them. This will also be very helpful in de-escalating a crisis or preventing one.
