My students face daily challenges, constant changes, and feeling misunderstood. My students come to my classroom looking for stability, a safe environment, and embracing creativity. I work at a small school with the majority of students considered low income. Students often move in and out of our school due to family relocation or being involved in Foster Care.
Every child no matter the span of time that I have them or what background they come in with I strive to help them by being an active participant in what they need.
Many of my students have behavioral and learning disorders that provide struggles for them daily. Building long lasting relationships is the most important part of my job. This builds hope and encouragement for students to stay actively engaged in education. My job as a first grade teacher is a stepping stone to them being successful in grades to come. I strive to create a collaborative learning community so they feel comfortable learning and growing together. My Project
This project is meant to help my kids be themselves while learning self regulation skills, overcoming common boundaries, and building classroom culture. Since we have long winters we have many indoor recess days but our school is small so we do not have an area for gross motor play. This often heightens the students frustration. Along with this many of our students come with behavior issues they struggle with self regulation, working cooperatively, and problem solving skills. I aim to hone in on their unique needs and provide modeling positive skills for solutions.
The items I have chosen are meant to be utilized to provide outlets for each students unique challenges and to learn coping skills instead of leading to frustration.
Within the order I have an array of musical items. These will be used for whole group singing and circle learning time. Items such as pencils and grips are to help the students who get frustrated with writing because their fine motor skills haven't been fully developed or worked on. The tubing is to add to the top of pencils for students who chew on pencils. The chew necklaces are to help intense chewers. The rocking chair is for a calming area for students to sit and use self regulation techniques to self soothe. The active play items such as parachute, balance toys, and blocks are to help students get out their energy on the days when we are unable to go outside. Each of these items with modeling and relationship building will help students to meet their emotional needs and improve their educational engagement.
