The students in Creative Writing are a talented, passionate, and diverse mix of writers. Favorite genres and topics range between zombies to crime to dystopian science fiction to teen drama and comedy. My five-year-old daughter recently described Creative Writing as “writing about stuff.” I love the simplicity of her definition.
Creative Writing helps us develop our own power of self-expression, helps us develop empathy, but it is also a way that we make meaning of the world around us and our place in it.
We write about the “stuff” that is most important to us, that brings us the most joy, and the most pain. High school can be a challenging time, and Creative Writing is an important vehicle for building self-confidence, and as well self-exploration and self-expression.
Students will be creating original podcasts and films using the equipment purchased for the project, and they will have a lot of voice and choice in regards to the content and style of their original pieces.
Writing a script for a film or podcast is only the beginning, and with the help of these resources, students will be able to see and hear their words come to life!
High quality equipment is essential for producing a high quality product, and to helping students create something they are proud of and are able to submit to competitions such as the California Student Media Festival. As a result, we are requesting a microphone and headphones (with cases) for recording podcasts, as well as an iPad to use to film original scripts (with the help of an iOgrapher film-making case that we won last year in the media festival).
