Mrs. M. from GA is requesting a class trip through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students the opportunity that for many would be a once in a lifetime experience, to engage in hands-on scientific phenomenon in the intentionally designed, STEAM based learning environment at the Tellus Science Museum.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are unique in their openness to new experiences and challenges. The demographic of my scholars is 53% English Language Learners, 59% academically at risk and 89% socioeconomically disadvantaged.
Even faced with obstacles and hardships that many of their counterparts across the country would never encounter, these young learners approach each opportunity with tenacity, enthusiasm and passion.
I believe they are among the most curious and insightful students to grace my classroom throughout my educational career. I have high expectations and they consistently show grit to attain new goals and acquire new skills. Their energy and excitement is infectious.
The Tellus Museum has galleries for nearly all of our 3rd grade science standards: rocks and minerals, fossils, weathering and erosion. We spend the whole year teaching these standards, but often times our students have limited background knowledge, and so making connections to these science standards is difficult.
This field trip would provide the hands-on experiences that many of our students need in order to make real-world connections and retain pertinent scientific prerequisite understandings for successful progression through the science standards.
Our students have become intrigued and invested in the scientific process and hope to explore the process in earnest!
