My Students

Our sixth grade students are creative, inquisitive, and eager to grow as learners. They love to read and are interested in finding new authors and great stories. As a whole class. we have shared the experience of reading four books together this year and hope to read several more. Students themselves have read about 12-15 books independently.

Our school serves a population of 400 students from grades kindergarten through 6th grade.

Our community is a small, partially rural one north of Boston. Our students participate in a wide range of activities from lacrosse to skiing, music, horseback riding, and computer gaming. They are active engaged twelve year olds.

My Project

Our sixth grade readers appreciate some of the best literature for their level. Award winning author Lauren Wolk's Beyond the Bright Sea is one of those unforgettable books that I am eager to share with our students. Set on an island in our own Massachusetts, the story inspires the main character's search for identity, compassion for others, and appreciation of family.

We seek 25 copies of Beyond the Bright Sea to use in our reading instruction of 49 students.

These books will be shared by two classes but will allow all students to be reading the same book and sharing the many lessons and insights from this wonderful book. These hard back copies of Beyond the Bright Sea will be used for years to come in our reading program.
