Beyond the Box: Creating Virtual Worlds Within the Classroom
My students need the Acer Predator Gaming Laptop that is VR-ready & can perform all VR tasks, HTC VIVE VR System, cables and cords for hook-up, and materials to keep system clean and safe over time.
Our school is located in Macungie, PA, a suburb of Allentown. Our K-5 elementary school educates over 700 students from a wide range of backgrounds. We have a very tight-knit community with families. Those families and students love lending a helping hand to those in need whenever possible.
In art, I strive to expose all students to the newest artwork/art mediums and most cutting-edge technologies in an effort to show them that the art world consists of more than just paper, pencils, and paint.
In the past few years, our school has also placed an extra focus on the S.T.E.A.M. initiative and I fully embrace that initiative in my art classroom.
Funding is not available to take my students on field trips. There are also students within our population who do not have the means to travel to, and in some cases afford, trips to additional educational experiences. As an educator, I have to be creative in bringing the interactive experiences to them on a daily basis. Each year this becomes more challenging as for the third consecutive year my budget has been cut.
My Project
The use of virtual reality by students in a classroom takes the experience of learning to another level.
Using VR, students are able to immerse themselves and collaborate in a world of learning that is simply unparalleled.
Last year I was lucky enough to allow my entire school, over 700 students spanning from kindergarten to 5th grade, get a taste of this type of learning as I borrowed a VR system for only one week.
After such a successful trial run with all of my students, I am extremely excited to have those students dive into more S.T.E.A.M. driven experiences! Simply put, if virtual reality would find its way into our art classroom for the students to use, the opportunities would be endless!
