Beyond Tablets: Amazon Kindles Enable Engaging Small Group Learning
Help me give my students access to another realm of learning opportunities. Just eight tablets allows the class to divide into small groups for customized instruction or interactive digital learning.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My 120 students are from minority, single-parent, working class households. With almost all of our kids on free/reduced lunch programs, we're a school that may be poor in community resources and parent availability, but rich in commitment, positive relationships, creativity, and optimism.
Will you work with me to close the opportunity gap?
These young people have little academic support in their families, but at least half of them could be the first in their family to go to college or get a professional job.
Our district is a pioneer in creating engaging math teaching strategies, and we have coaches helping teachers sharpen their online materials. We just need regular access to the devices to implement those best practices in the classroom.
My Project
Our Title I school—situated in a poor and working-class suburb of Latino and Black families—simply does not have adequate technology resources for all our 1600 students. Online resources for visualizing math and tutorial videos are now extremely effective at conveying the real-world meaning of math. Without regular access to in-class devices, my students are missing out on these enrichment experiences.
These tablets will benefit my classes beyond just being a digital/multimedia resource to cement their learning.
The tablets will also allow me the flexibility to run three concurrent smaller classes by dividing students into small workgroups. In these small groups, I already provide focused teaching, observation, and feedback to better reinforce specific concepts and to identify and correct misconceptions. Activities on the tablets will provide students an additional avenue to engage the content and get quick, meaningful feedback.
I have a classroom culture built around transparency and trust, but with verification and boundaries. As students are using the devices, I will regularly check to make sure students are on-task by checking their screens and ensuring that activities are chunked into easily accessible portions.
As our principal is fond of saying, "Free and reduced may reflect the price of what they eat but not on how they learn." Thanks for being a partner in their future success!
