Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Ever since starting my leveled library for books leveled A-J, my students have been really excited about reading. Now so many of them are above grade level and need even higher leveled books!
Imagine you get a shoe that is too big or too small; you're uncomfortable or you may trip.
Now imagine the same feelings for a book that is too easy or too hard, it's hard to keep learning when a book is this way. So, I need AN EXPANDED leveled library to help my students learn with that perfect fit book! Currently I teach 20 first-grade students in a Title 1 school. My school is on a journey to offer the best education possible to a high poverty population. With this, comes many adoptions of better curriculum and training to help teachers help their students. These books will greatly help me meet the needs of my students that need more challenging books!
My Project
In the fall I found out that many of my students do not own books at home. With my first leveled library funded project, I was able to provide appropriately leveled books for all students that were reading books that are the national expectations for first grade. Each week students get to borrow two books and read them to their families. They also use the books to practice reading in the classroom. I am floundering now though to offer books at the right level for my students that are reading well above grade level and are starting to even read at a third grade level, which is incredible and amazing! Help me continue to challenge those kiddos that are excelling!
My school as a whole is trying everything it can to get more appropriately leveled books into the hands of kids.
It's exactly what they need in order to progress through their lifelong journey to becoming literate and a lover of literature. Having more books at higher levels will allow me to provide just that.
