Help me give my students the tools to be successful at critical thinking, reading, and writing. We are working on integrating writing with STEM projects to help them see the relevance of both.
Many of today's students are quite skilled in using technology for learning and reading. Some students in second grade are not completely ready for reading independently while others are reading above grade level, but may not be completely comprehending what they are reading.
I want to help my students to realize the power of words and how expanding their vocabulary can open up their eyes to a whole new world.
Second grade is a transition year from reading mostly simple words to reading complex text. I want to help those struggling readers to increase vocabulary, and I also want to help those advanced readers to challenge themselves with new vocabulary. When I challenge my students to play vocabulary and phonics games, they are initially very skeptical. But after giving it a try, they realize how challenging and fun it can be at any level.
My Project
These books and learning games will help all students, whether they are proficient readers or those struggling to read a whole passage, to increase their vocabulary and understanding of what they are reading. Games and puzzles are a fun way for students to challenge their vocabulary and phonics skills no matter their skill level.
Students need many different methods to increase vocabulary and comprehension of words.
Word ladders and phonics games will help develop students vocabulary and increase comprehension. STEM projects will help add a real-life experience to their writing activities. Students who are excited about what they are learning will be more engaged and remember what they are learning.
