I have a great group of female student-athletes who are dedicated on and off the basketball court! We live in Central Mississippi in a low socio-economic area. 87% of our students receive free and reduced lunches. These students do not receive any financial assistance for sports or extra-curricular activities. All funds to purchase equipment must be raised through fundraising efforts.
Please help our girls basketball team reach the next level of athletic competition with supplies to support their endeavors.
Because we live in such a low socio-economic area, our students lack safe equipment to use in class and at practice. We want to provide our female students with exercise equipment that is safe and provides a conducive learning environment to promote a sense of pride with in the school system.
My Project
My students live in a high poverty area with little or no access to weight equipment or exercise equipment. We all know the obesity rates are extremely high. I plan to use these items to help my female-athletes to get in shape and stay in shape. This equipment will also be used to promote agility, flexibility. develop strength, and develop hand-eye coordination. The medicine balls are great for weight training and have been found to be effective in plyometric training to increase explosive power in female athletes. It is important as educators and physical education teachers that we promote a positive work ethic among students
With better conditioning and strength training, this group of hard-working females student-athletes can win more games and therefore increase their confidence and self-esteem.
Through this game of basketball, I am not only teaching them basketball skills but also life skills of teamwork, fair-play, competition, and responsibility. These characteristics will build their self-esteem and confidence. Most of my players do not have the support or encouragement from home to help build these skills, therefore they rely on teachers, coaches, and staff at school to help them form these skills.
