Students in my kindergarten classroom come to school excited about learning. Many of my students come from low-income families, and all the students at my school receive free breakfast and lunch. This background can mean that students’ families cannot afford to purchase needed school supplies.
My students deserve to receive the best education possible so that they are able to succeed in school and in life.
These boys and girls have such awesome attitudes, and they try their best every day!
My Project
At my school, we do not send home traditional homework for our kindergarten students to complete. There is no research that shows that homework is beneficial, at such a young age. Instead, we send home a few books each week, for our students to read with their families. This helps families be involved in their children's educations and helps students build on the reading skills they have learned in the classroom. Right now, the books we have are too difficult for students to read independently, until the end of the year. While listening to books being read aloud by their family members is beneficial, the impact of this "take home book" activity could be multiplied. If students also take home books that they can read independently, they will actually be practicing what they are learning at school.
I am requesting 137 beginning level fiction, nonfiction, sight word and comic books, so my students can borrow them, take them home and practice reading them to their families.
This will help students practice their reading skills, build confidence and encourage family involvement. More reading practice at home will help students achieve the reading level that they need, in order to meet or exceed the expected end of the year kindergarten reading level. Having an excellent early reading foundation will help students stay on track to becoming a successful, literate adult.
