"A good education is a foundation for a better future."
Elizabeth Warren
As a kindergarten teacher, this quote speaks to me as I think about the foundation I am helping to establish as these children begin their education journey. Even though they have years of school ahead of them, I know the impact I have on them and the experience they have in my classroom will shape who and what they become. They enter my classroom from very diverse backgrounds, but each child is full of the same wonder and hope to discover the world around them. Each day I teach, I strive to spark the joy of learning into each of their hearts that will enable them to be life long learners.
My Project
As a veteran teacher, I have had the privilege of witnessing the evolution of technology in schools and in the classroom. I've seen children go from the very mundane and constraining paper and pencil tasks, to being thrilled with singing and dancing characters cheering them on while working on a phonics app or online reading program.
With the necessity of differentiated classrooms, we must take advantage of the technology that allows us to meet each student at their own level.
Adding more iPads to my classroom will allow my students to have access to the programs they need, not only to help them learn, but to foster the love of learning I so deeply hope to instill in them.
Upon receiving these new iPads, you would walk into my room and see a small group of children listening to online storytelling that matches their current reading level. At a table across the room, two other students would be using the iPad to post their work to their personalized portfolio on Seesaw and dictating what they did and learned during that time. Through this app, their work and recording is sent directly to their parents for immediate communication and positive dinner table conversations. On another iPad, students would be using the app, Puppet Pals, to be writers and directors. They are no longer passive listeners; they are engaged, active creators.
While the influx of technology can seem overwhelming at times, it allows for excitement, personalization, creativity and rigor in the classroom. In order to foster the love of learning and ensure brighter futures, we must be sure all of these are found in our classrooms.
