This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Despite the struggles that my students face day-to-day, they are amazing in every way! My first and second graders live in a low socioeconomic area and attend a Title I school at which 100% of the students receive free or reduced priced breakfast and lunch. My students are faced with living in neighborhoods full of gun violence and gangs, yet they are expected to sit still, be quiet, open up a book and learn something new. They are just not focused on the task at hand. It's time to shift the traditional 20th-century learning towards the 21st century interdisciplinary learning to get them more engaged.
My Project
Florescent lighting and uncomfortable class carpeting can cause students with disabilities difficulty with focusing on academic tasks. Light filters and adequate lighting from lamps are needed to help reduce student's complaints of harsh bright lights and headaches. Additionally, a comfortable, plush class rug will help to reduce students' discomfort of sitting on the hard carpeting in the classroom.
Students perform better academically when they have a comfortable class setting.
Light dimmers/shade and lamps will allow natural lighting from the windows in place of florescent lighting. Light filters can help reduce florescent light brightness and reduce stress and irritability for students with disabilities. A comfortable rug will allow students to focus more on academic tasks.
