I am currently in my 15th year of teaching, but my first year in 8th grade in a small urban district. My students come from various backgrounds and for many of them, school is their “safe” place. I have learned so much about life from my 8th graders! Every child is valued for their unique personality as well as being an important menber of our team! Our class includes a wide range of learning styles and abilities and those differences are both acknowledged and celebrated.
The fairy rope lights and the floor lights that I am requesting are to help make my classroom more trauma sensitive. The Aloha Chair and book case with a reading nook offer a calming corner for my students that need a place to “escape!” Some of the students are coming in with a lot on their shoulders and being able to offer them a place to unwind during class would help them, in the long run, do better in class!
I believe that the switch from regular classroom lighting to a softer lighting will help to make the room more inviting to the students as well as a more comfortable atmosphere in which to learn!
