Learning two languages in a day has long-term impacts. My 5- and 6-year -old students are learning what it is like to be in school learning in whole group, small groups, with partners, and independently throughout a whole day in school. For some, it may be their first time away from the comfort of their homes and their immediate family members.
Michael Gove's quote captures some of the reasons why learning another language is important: "Learning [another] language, and the culture that goes with it, is one the most useful things we can do to broaden the empathy and imaginative sympathy and cultural outlook of children."
My students are learning to what it means to learn together, share, and grow with each other. Moreover, they are doing all this while juggling with learning two languages in a day with the first half of the day in full Vietnamese and the other half in English. Each and every day, I am proud at all of them for their openness and for their resilience.
My Project
Students in Kindergarten are learning letter formation. They need fun activities that will keep them engaged in the learning. We need book bins, Alphabet Practice Cards and Build the Letter Activity Centers to meet their developmental need to play and learn.
My hope is to engage my students who have engineering minds as I share how to use the tools in the Build the Letter Activity Centers to learn letter formation.
The first time I came across this tool, I knew that the students who learn through tactile sensory would have a ton of fun with it while learning something educational.
On top of that, the tactile side of it helps develop the sensory part of their brain. In turn, it helps to make the learning stick. Hence, they will be better letter writers! Let's make it happen!
