Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
In our classroom we focus on becoming mathematicians, letter investigators, reading experts, authors, global citizens, scientists and engineers. My goal is to share experiences with them that they would otherwise not have the chance to experience because of their diverse backgrounds. They all come from a low socioeconomic (low SES) background, are recipients of free and reduced lunch, and are all English Language Learners (EL). Every day they must overcome adversity to reach their goals.
My students have become invested in their learning and are becoming problem solvers and collaborators.
They are committed to coming to school every day ready to learn and do their best. Through mastering our academic goals and standards, as well as gaining strong character qualities, my students will be set up for success. My students will be impacted in a way that will push them to the next level to be college ready. They will have more ways to demonstrate their knowledge and ways of thinking. Kindergarten is such a valuable asset and so very important to set them up for success. It gives them a solid foundation academically that they will need for the rest of their academic journey.
My Project
My project will teach my students understand financial responsibility. My current point system will change to a cash system with a financial application. Students will be able to buy STEM time in order to implement the new STEM materials purchased. My students now receive points for positive behavior and showing good learner qualities throughout the school day. They use their points to earn a pick out of the treasure box. Kindergartners struggle with saving versus spending and making choices about immediate or delayed gratification. Our standards cover the recognizing and counting of the coins, but I want something more for my students.
Financial Literacy begins with the knowledge that you have choices on how and when to spend, as well as knowing you can't have it all.
I want my students to recognize and know the value of coins, but also understand spending and saving. Students need to know the importance of delayed gratification or working hard and saving money to reach a goal. They will need to save their "money" in order to purchase greater amounts of STEM time.
Students will make deposits of their points and receive one cent per point, then place it into their banks. On Fridays, we will sort their coins to see if they can exchange for larger coins. This will help students learn the value of different coins in an applicable way. At this time, they will also make their decision to save their coins or make a purchase. It will cost them more to buy STEM time with all the new STEM materials or just a treasure box pick. They will be able to make choices about their spending in a hands-on way. This project will empower my students to see the value of money and be more financially literate.
