"I wish we could read this all day!" was one student's response to a passage of Roald Dahl's The Witches. The excitement and inspiration in the children's eyes, when they read or hear something they enjoy is unmatchable. "Do you have any more books for me?" is a question I get from the same little girl at the end of every day. In our class, reading is all day, every day. However, we are running out of interesting things to read!
The students search the shelves in our room for Backyard Sports, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, new All-About Animal Books, Amelia Bedilia, Magic Treehouse, Dork Diaries, Goosebumps, Captain Underpants, I Survived, Roald Dahl, Biographies, Heidi Heckelback, Joke Books, Bad Kitty.....these are a few of the most popular requests.
We have worked hard to foster a love of reading in our classroom. In order to keep this growing, we need to provide choices....lots of choices....and fulfill their requests!
My Project
These books were requested by the students, and they will be used EVERY DAY by the same students. If fulfilled, my students will see how important reading books that interest them really is. They are such good sports, going to the same barren shelves every day and selecting from a small variety of worn books. They do their best to make some connections, to be entertained and try to use their imagination to go beyond the torn pages. My students deserve new, fresh and exciting books that they WANT to read, selected JUST for them. So, I asked them what their "wish list" would be, and here it is.
