Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from various social economic backgrounds. They range from low income families to homes where parents are trying their best to raise their children in a neighborhood that has gang related problems daily. There are students that don't have either parent and are either with a foster family or with a relative. Either way, they come to class eager to learn, which is why I wouldn't want anything more but to enhance their excitement for education through games and materials.

My Project

I have been slowly but surely implementing flexible seating in my classroom for the last 2 years. My students have a choice to sit where they choose in order to do their best work. At first, I was skeptical thinking that sitting on a chair, at a desk with the rest of their peers leads to success. By golly, I was wrong. Since implementing flexible seating, I have seen a change in my students. They have taken ownership of what works best for them.

Currently, I have one stool among other cushions, rocking chairs and exercise balls. That one stool is the most sought after seat, especially during small group time when I work with them. My students love this stool and we have a rotation schedule to make sure everyone gets their turn. I believe adding 6 more of these stools will only enhance my students learning by motivating them to succeed in education.
