Our students are busy and on the go. They are curious and enthusiastic about learning. They are excited about making connections among their learning and experiences. They like to celebrate their success and the success of their peers. They encourage and help each other grow socially and academically.
They are a group of diverse second grade students learning in both English and Spanish.
They are becoming bi-literate citizens. They are active, creative, and growing in all academic areas. They are learning to be more responsible citizens each and every day.
My Project
These social-emotional books cover a lot of topics. I plan on using these books during morning meeting to introduce topics such as responsibility, sharing, anger management, growth mindset, and perseverance. The books are engaging and authentic. Julia Cook, the author of many of the books requested, knows how to tell memorable stories that help kids understand a complex skill.

When using other books previously received through past DonorsChoose projects, students hung on to mantras in the book and would remind themselves of it throughout the day. One girl learned that no one is perfect through reading one of the books. That opened up her ability to take risks in her learning. I am confident that these new books will do the same for my current and future classes.
