Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school is located in a large, urban city with a diverse population. Most of my students come from single-parent families or from families where both parents work long hours to support their families. Often times, several generations live together in the same house.
Many of my students come from homes where English is not the only language spoken, and many have come to us from other countries.
The majority of my students receive a free lunch. I am lucky enough to teach an awesome group of middle school students who are creative, eager, and enthusiastic. They are always interested in learning more about a topic and constantly challenge me to be on my toes. I teach students in the bottom 20% of their grade level, and those who are in the top 20% of their grade level for reading are in need of materials to challenge and inspire them.
My Project
We are asking for a variety of new books for our classroom library. We don't have a library in our school, so if students want to get books they get them in our room. All of the books we are asking for are student requested. I asked them what they would like and this is the list they came up with They asking for some great books like Nate the Great, Down a Dark Hall, and some excellent graphic novels. Even though these students will not be in my class next year, they have all asked to come back to borrow any new books! I want to continue to provide great reading opportunities for my students, and that means having an AWESOME classroom library with a variety of books for them to choose from.
Getting students to read is the first step to becoming lifelong learners.
When students have books they want to read, it makes my job much easier (and a lot more fun)! By receiving some new books for our classroom library, you will be helping me encourage a new group of readers and learners. Thank you!
