This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work in the largest and most racially and linguistically diverse elementary schools in Oakland. We are a close knit school community. We are a high poverty area and most students qualify for free or reduced price lunch. My students come from families speaking over twenty-six different languages. Many of them do not have English language support at home.
In my class, there are a variety of learning styles and academic levels that need to be addressed.
My students come to school each day eager to love to explore and learn new things. They put their best foot forward everyday.
My Project
My students need leveled fiction books to continue to thrive and improve their reading. With a greater variety of books for me to share with my students they will have a better chance of staying focused and engaged. As I continue to push for students to be active readers, the extra books added to my classroom library will encourage students to read more. The books will allow for plenty of oral and independent reading activities to help close some of the reading gaps, especially for my English language learners.
The donations for this project will improve my classroom because it will not only stimulate my students to read more books it will also increase their self-confidence and motivation for learning.
The more they read, the better they will become at it. The better a reader they become, the more successful they will be in all areas of the curriculum.
