My students need different options of flexible seating in order to assure that they are in their most optimal mode of learning. We want them to be comfortable and engaged at all times!
My students are absolutely amazing in every way. Our class is complete with 25 enthusiastic, curious and animated first graders from a range of cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Our class is an integrated co-teaching (ICT) classroom meaning that a portion of our students have special needs. Our needs range from speech and language disorders to autism but none of the labels stop any of the students from trying their hardest and always exceeding expectations. These 25 students are dedicated and excelling in the classroom is the norm!
Our class of students are a unique, clever, determined and persistent bunch with a range of interests and needs - making each and every lesson new and exciting!
My co-teacher and I take a very hands-on approach to education which allows students to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
My Project
It is extremely hard for me to sit and concentrate on a task if I am not in the most comfortable situation. It is only normal that I believe my students be given a variety of seating options in order to best suit their needs! I have students who wiggle, some who never use the backs of their chairs, others who are constantly tapping their feet and others who always prefer to be on the floor. I need to be able to provide different options so that my students' strengths can shine through their work.
My students deserve a large range of seating options in order for them to be the best that they can be as students and individuals.
They should be able to focus on their work rather than being preoccupied over how to find a comfortable position. I allow my students to stand, sit and lay down, as long as they are being productive and showing me that their thinking caps are on.
The shelves will be used as benches that will be around the rug. This will allow students to still be a part of our community but sit in a different position. The stools are movable and will be useful across different classroom set-ups for students who have difficulty using a typical chair. The lap desks will allow for our students to do their work when sitting on the floor or on a bench with no surface in front of them. These different seating options will allow my students diverse ways of sitting not only when working independently but also when engaged in whole-group instruction on the rug.
