My Students

I am the media coordinator at a small, rural elementary school in a low socioeconomic area.

We have approximately 315 students in Grades K-5, with 70% receiving free and reduced lunch.

Many of our students come to us with very few "real-world" experiences that we take for granted. Our staff is committed to expanding our students' knowledge and enriching their education by providing them with a variety of hands-on learning activities.

My Project

Sometimes I sits and thinks, and sometimes I just sits." - Satchel Paige. Recently we received a grant to create a butterfly garden on the school grounds. The students worked hard helping to prepare the garden site, planting, and mulching. The majority of them had never planted a plant before. Now that the garden is done, we'd like a bench in the garden for the students to sit on and enjoy watching the garden grow, view the butterflies we hope to attract, and write in their nature journals. We'd like to use a bench made of recycled plastic because our school just started a recycling program this school year. Using a bench made of recycled plastic would allow the students to see some of the benefits of recycling.

Adding a bench to our butterfly garden would allow the students to more fully enjoy the garden by inviting them to take the time to sit, observe, and experience their outdoor world.
