Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our school started the Running Club in 2016 to encourage students to become more fit and excited about healthy lifestyles. Students are taught about healthy foods to fuel their bodies, positive peer relationships, and how to exercise. Not only is running part of their exercise program, but students also learn about warming up their bodies and muscles prior to working out.
There is a wide range of students, of age, abilities, and interests, who support each other as they work towards their personal goals.
Students are in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade and some of been part of the club for years, but others are part of Running Club for the first time. Older and more experienced students mentor the younger students and help them to become strong, healthy runners.
My Project
Running Club teaches students about living a healthy life - including healthy eating, positive interactions with peers, and exercise. Students work in small groups to learn about foods to eat to fuel their bodies, as well as the proper way to stretch prior to running and how to run to avoid injuries.
It is amazing to watch their faces as they learn how far and fast they can run!
Students track their laps at weekly practices and set personal goals to increase at every practice. It is especially wonderful to watch them achieve their first 5K run!
The Beltsville Academy Mushala Memorial 5K run is on June 1, 2019. Students get a special team tee-shirt and run as a group. They represent the school. but also the club and become positive role models for their peers. The registration fee for each student is $5. Their team tee-shirt is $10. At the end of the race, there is a celebration with snacks and awards for the students, which is $5.
