Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

We are part of a school community that welcomes diverse students of all abilities, educates and empowers them to succeed in college and career, and prepares them to lead in the sustainability of our community and world. Our student body reflects the demographics of the public school population of the city of Boston: 82% are living at or below the federal poverty line; 54% are African American, 31% are Hispanic, and 12% are English-language learners.

In order to meet the reading needs and wants of students, I would love to expand my classroom library to reflect their diverse backgrounds and interests.

My Project

I would love to expand my classroom library to include the most read, the most recent, and the most entertaining series! It is easier for students to read when they have an idea and understanding of the setting, characters, and plot of a book series. Students have more comprehension support in book series: each new book in the series follows and builds on the first, making it easier for their comprehension.

Each series offers at least three books, so students can read along as the characters grow, fall in love, and conquer their demons—along with empires, mysteries, and everyday drama.

Please help me give my returning 9th graders, many of whom haven't been in a classroom since middle school, a series of books that are fresh, interesting, and captivating so that they can find themselves (and lose themselves) in a diverse and interesting selection of quality reading materials.
