My students are naturally creative and inquisitive. They have learned to become tenacious musicians, persevering to find creative solutions to whatever task is presented to them.
In our classroom, instruments are a means to extend and enhance our learning.
My students treat all of our instruments with respect and know that they are tools to help them as they explore the elements of music. My music room is a safe place to explore and experiment with music, which makes my students all the more likely to take risks throughout the creative process!
My Project
Our music classroom has old bell sets that were donated to us by another school many years ago. They are falling apart, and many no longer produce a good quality sound. Many are missing parts of their frames, which make them potentially unsafe for students to use. These instruments are incredibly helpful for my students as we discuss melody and harmony, but their state of disrepair makes them difficult to use effectively. We are slowly replacing the old, unsafe instruments with new ones to create a full class set to maximize student engagement.
These new bell sets will help to enhance my students' understanding of melody and harmony in a safe and engaging way.
The bars on the bells are colored to match those of the keys on a piano, which makes it easier for visual learners to understand and decode the notes that they are playing. This also helps to reinforce the difference between accidentals and naturals, which can be difficult for my students to grasp when all of the bars are silver. The plastic cases make them easy for students to carry, as well as protect them so that they last us for a long time. The included mallets can be stored in the cases, so that all of the supplies my students need are all located in one place.
