Hooray! This project is fully funded

For eight years I have offered an after school program for third, fourth and fifth graders to learn how to sew and make quilts. A 3rd grade teachers also helps me in the class. Each year I have approximately 15 to 20 students who come to my classroom after school to learn how to sew by hand. Students make beautiful small quilts, vests and pillows under my guidance. I purchase batting, fabric, needles, and other sewing notions with my own money. Students who start in the quilting club as a third grader often return in subsequent years to make additional quilts. This year I have 19 students signed up and even have two teachers joining the group to learn how to make a quilt. Although everything is done by hand, I thought it might be nice to get a sewing machine to teach the students how to use one. Not only could we make quilts faster, but we could use it for quilting or making vests. I will train the students who are in their second year of quilting on how to use a sewing machine. I would like to get a sewing machine that is designed for quilting. We don't need machines with fancy stitches since we are just sewing straight seams. However, a sewing machine with a good buttonhole maker would be great since we would need to make buttonholes on vests. The current quilting club program is an enjoyable and fun after school activity for students. I think teaching students how to use a sewing machine will make our sewing projects even more exciting and will give students yet another learning opportunity. It will also expand the types of projects we can make in class. Thank you for this opportunity!
