All too often students that wish to participate in the school band are required to purchase or rent their own instrument. We know that this expense is often impossible for many families. In order to open the door to the music room for all students at our school, we must build our school inventory!
The students at my school are a wonderful bunch of unique students.
On my first day, I am quoted saying "There is an overabundance of polite students at the school!" I still am caught off guard when I get another ten thank yous from students for simply teaching a lesson. Daily I am impressed at how quickly they learn and how rapid their musical growth has been in this first month. In my four years of teaching, I have never taught such a bright and cheerful group of students.
My Project
This is my first year at my school and already we have run out of instruments in our inventory. Luckily, every student that could not afford an instrument was provided one. However, I am nervous for next year, as the number of music students shot up drastically this year. This year every student in the 5th grade (60 students) has decided to join music, putting our number of students in the music program at almost 100. Unfortunately, we only have 35 instruments in our school inventory. We are expected to have another 60 students join the music program next year. this will put our numbers at around 140 students. With the additional instruments like an Educational Bell Kit provided by this grant, we will be able to help accommodate this daunting number of students that will be joining the program next year who's families are unable to afford the purchase of their own instruments.
The number of students joining our program next year will make for one very big number.
Luckily, this is a very good problem to have! Serving this many students will be an utter joy and provide them an experience they unfortunately can not get at many other schools due to budget cuts on music programs.
