Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I'd like to introduce you to my Pre-Kindergarten students.
My students are from a diverse background of Vietnamese, Hispanic, and Mexican cultures. My students are ages 4 and 5 with great personalities and diverse interests. They are curious and full of energy.
My students are mostly from low socio-economic backgrounds and our school is a Title I school. We are a bilingual population. My students love to learn and so do their parents, but with limited resources and lack of materials such as books at home, it can be a challenge.
My Project
We need your help. My class loves being read to and some are already learning to read on their own. Yes, even though they are only 4 and 5 years old. But, we have a big problem, you see. We do not have books in our classroom. Our school does not have a lot of money and the teacher before me took all the books home with her. So we are left with an empty library area.
I have done the best I could to buy books here and there.
Yet, it still remains that we have virtually no books in the classroom. The school librarian tried to help but gave us her old books from 1960s! Not appealing to our young minds who need fresh current books with beautiful and inviting covers. Print motivation is one of the six pre-reading skills and without appealing books for our young minds, they will miss out on such an important skill.
I know exactly where the books will go. I have created a beautiful library space with bright inviting colors. I have book shelves ready to receive concept books, picture books, nonfiction, and all books donated to our project. These books will be loved, explored, and most importantly - read!
We are so grateful for this donation and will treasure the love of reading always.
