I need meditation materials to enhance my own mindfulness meditation practice, to use as exemplars in creating student meditations, and so that I might better learn how to teach mindfulness meditation to my students.
I am a school counselor in a public, K-5 elementary school. The students at my school are a diverse group culturally, ethnically, and economically. I work primarily with students in grades 3 through 5, providing classroom lessons and individual and small-group counseling services.
Albert Einstein said, "Intellectual growth should commence at birth and cease only at death." In order for me to provide the highest quality of school counseling services for my students, it is imperative that I continue to seek out opportunities to update and expand my knowledge and skills.
I plan to do so by extending my own practice of mindfulness meditation so that I become more skilled at developing meditations for my students and at teaching them the skills required to utilize this valuable practice.
Over the past year I have endeavored to learn more about mindfulness practices so that I might teach these skills to my students. A consistent finding in the field of mindfulness is that the teacher must herself be a mindfulness meditation practitioner in order to effectively share these techniques with students. In this project I am requesting a meditation anthology, mantras, music, and other meditation resources produced by Deepak Chopra, an expert in this field, to further my own mindfulness meditation practice so that I might become more skilled at teaching mindfulness techniques to my students and creating mindfulness meditations for their use.
Meditation and other mindfulness techniques are important to teach students, as research has shown them to be effective in helping students focus their attention and regulate their emotions.
These meditation resources will further my expertise in the area of mindfulness practice so that I am better able to teach these practices to my students. The collection of materials focus on a variety of topics, including physical and emotional health, positive self-talk, and creating and sustaining healthy relationships, among other topics. These topics are aligned with school counseling curriculum standards focusing on students' academic and social-emotional development and provide practical tools students can use to become more effective learners and to express their feelings appropriately.
My students deserve the best school counselor available, and I am committed to meeting that challenge. To fulfill that role, it is imperative that I stay up-to-date with cutting-edge practices and information around mindfulness interventions. The materials requested in this project will provide an important opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge and improve my skills in my chosen profession.
