My students need picture books to read and learn about tolerance and acceptance of others, as well as a book shelf to display the books in our classroom!
I teach twenty-two eager Second graders in a Title I school. Many of the students in our community are socioeconomically disadvantaged, with approximately 74% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Even with the challenges some of my students face, they come to school ready to learn every day!
I believe in putting kids first - every student, every day!
My students are an awesome bunch of kids! They are smart, creative, kind, and caring. They set goals and then strive to meet those goals every day and never give up!
My Project
My group of second graders love to listen to stories and learn through the characters and/or people we are reading about. The books I have selected for this project will teach my kids many positive character traits. As we read these books we will discuss many topics such as tolerance, acceptance, empathy, kindness, understanding, responsibility, and many more. My students will learn through the characters the importance of understanding and accepting others and their differences. I want them to know that not everybody is the same and that is what makes them unique! As we read the books, the students will think about what makes them different from others and how that "difference" makes them special! They will create an art exhibit entitled "The Best Part of Me", showcasing their uniqueness! Along with each display the students will create a written piece as to why they are special and how they can make a difference in the world by expressing tolerance and acceptance of others on a daily basis! They will use examples of tolerance and acceptance from the books included in the materials list to help them with their writing. The books will be displayed for the students to have easy access to them on the requested bookshelf. This will also be a visual reminder of the type of people we are striving to be like. Thank you for helping my students become our future - a future of tolerance and understanding!!!
