As a BSN prepared registered nurse at an urban, high-poverty elementary school, my students face challenges both in and out of the classroom. A large percentage of the families in our district fall below poverty level. Therefore, all students within the district receive free breakfast, lunch and snack each day. My students at the elementary level range from Pre-K through sixth grade.
Within our school, minorities make up the majority of our student population.
In addition, we provide services for a large number of students that speak English as a second language. These young learners come to school each day ready to learn. They are deserving of a quality education within an environment that is nurturing, safe and prepared for any incident that may arise during the school day.
My Project
Ensuring students have a safe learning environment is an integral part of providing a quality education. It is my responsibility to provide quality medical care and first aid to students on a daily basis. Furthermore, I must be prepared for any situation or natural disaster that may occur at any given time.
Being prepared saves LIVES!
With the increase that we are seeing in violence and crime in the city, state and nation, we must always prepare for the worst possible scenario. The leading cause of death from a shooting or accident that is non-life threatening is bleeding. This trauma kit would provide me with supplies necessary to stabilize a student with a serious injury, keep children warm during an evacuation, and provide first aid and medical treatment to students and staff during a natural disaster or unforeseen incident.
