Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Remember the joy you felt when you got real mail? That joy is not lost in our teens. I want to write my students a note personally, include stickers to add to those water bottles and notebooks to make them their own, and mail them. As a teacher in a low-income school, I seek to provide my students with both academic education and a safe place to grow in their social-emotional skills. I do this by establishing relationships with each of my students. I get to know their passions by engaging and noticing the students' own unique journeys in life.
In middle school, this is a pivotal time to have your basic need of being noticed met.
I strive to do this daily inside and outside our classroom. As Covid19 has caused our school to get creative with our class scheduling, students I typically see every day, I have only been able to see them in person for 20% of our time. We are now being forced into remote learning for an undisclosed amount of time. Help me notice my students even when I cannot physically be with them now.
My Project
Students need to believe in themselves to be able to learn. It is a basic human need to be noticed and valued. This connection with my students has been very challenging this year with Covid19. I hope that by personally sending each of them a handwritten card, with stickers picked for them individually, they will feel noticed.
Remember the joy you had when receiving a card with a little something special in it in the mail, aid me in giving my students this same feeling.
My students are loving, caring, and giving. It is easy for them to feel lost in this pandemic world that they are navigating. I want to give them a bit of joy and let them know I see them.
