My students are fun, loving and eagered to learn Spanish and English. They come from low income households but they come to school excited everyday. Some of them are either learning a second language or excited because they are using their native language (Spanish) to learn. They are able to learn easier when they have picutures and items to touch and manipulate.
Being able to see, touch, and manipulate little tactile objects allows them to make long lasting vocabulary connections.
These connections help build a solid foundations as they continue to learn Spanish. Aside from building connections they are able to use the vocabulary they already know in English and transfer that to Spanish. Which reinforces the skills they practice at the teacher small group.
After whole group instruction students have the opportunity to practice reading, writing and vocabulary skills independently. Some students still need the extra support that I am able to provide for them in a small group setting. The easel will allow me to write or use magnets for the students to see. While practicing different letter sounds to engage vocabulary the Spanish alpahbet teaching tub will allow me to show students words that begin with that letter sound. For example the "A" tub will have arbol y avion (tree and plane) which both start with an A in spanish. The Tub O’ Spanish Words will complement the skills being practice by helping students form spanish sentences.
The Alphabet tub and The Tub O' words will help students master alphabet sounds they can later use for sorting acitivies as well as memory games.
These are a few essential that will ensure that my students leave second grade a year closer to being bilingual and billiterate.
