Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Most of my students are working below fifth grade math and reading levels, but they always have the willingness to learn. We are an inner-city school where the average family falls into the low-income category.
The incoming fifth graders are an interesting bunch, but all are open to new activities and ready to learn!
We are a small neighborhood Title I public school and have only two classrooms per grade level. Every child in our school receives free breakfast and lunch. All the teachers, regardless of the grade they teach, have a strong relationship with all the students in the building. We do believe that it takes a village, and when the children graduate from our school, we all take pride in the fact we were all part of the process.
Our students come to school every day ready to learn in spite of the challenges they face on a daily basis. Because of that, they inspire me to live up to their expectations and give them a reason to overcome some of those challenges and be excited to learn new things.
My Project
It's amazing the amount of paper that is used in our school and most of it ends up in the regular trash on a daily basis. I would like to start a school community project with our 5th graders to collect all the paper products from each classroom to send to the recycling center.
I would like our 5th graders to become ambassadors to other classmates and even to our staff and teach them about the importance of protecting our environment, one piece of paper at at time.
Each classroom would receive a cloth reusable bin to place all their paper products in. The recycle ambassadors would go around to collect bins and put in recyclable plastic bags, which then would go to the recycle center. The smaller classroom bins would then go back to start collecting more paper. All ambassadors will wear recycle badges to identify themselves.
This is an important first step in protecting our environment and our future. Let's go GREEN!
