This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Albert Einstein quotes, "The mind that opens to a new idea never returns to its original size." Therefore, my goal is to provide my diverse learners with meaningful projects and instructional resources to address the disabilities that impede their learning such as Attention-Deficit, Dyslexia, Social-Emotional, and Autism. Their past experiences of failure in school have outweighed their successes as they also deal with social-economic ills within their communities, making the burden to learn more difficult.
Nevertheless, in spite of their circumstances, my students are inquisitive, creative, hopeful and eager to come to school- their safe haven; therefore, they know that their teacher holds their minds dear to her heart and will continue to discover innovative ways to challenge them to think and learn!
Aligning each student to the appropriate instructional resources, my students can grasp concepts through a combination of visual stimuli and usage of hands-on materials as well as respond to intervention through interactive, arts-infused, project-based, hands-on learning activities. With time and investment in exploring how they learn, my students will leave my classroom with a newfound growth mindset!
My Project
I am a teacher with a background in film/video production and I love embedding media into my lessons. Digital Storytelling is an art form in which students can chronicle the meaningful events of their lives, tell a story through the eyes of their favorite character or digitally report about a person or event through research. Using the digital medium for storytelling gives students an opportunity to create using the tools that are relevant and can enhance their livelihoods both personally and academically.
The ability for students to tell their stories in a variety of ways - integrating music, graphics, photographs, videoes, artwork, interviews, and research- allows them to show their perspective and understanding, and express their creativity that engages their auditory, visual and kinesthetic skills.
Some students believe that lack of finances, family structures or academic prowess is equated to being hopeless, helpless and not having an interesting story to tell- that perhaps, there is no meaning in their lives; however, my project will embrace social and emotional learning in which students will digitally tell how their lives matter as well tell about people and events that have led to social justice.
The Digital Storytelling in the Classroom: New Media Pathways to Literacy, Learning, and Creativity will guide our classroom storytelling curriculum. The EOS REBEL Video Creator Kit will be used to record high-quality videos. Students will edit their creations on the HP Pavilion 17.3" Laptop PC using Pinnacle Editing Software. The Julius Studio Photo Studio Kit 6 x 9 ft. Green White Black Muslin Backdrop Screen & Supporting System, Umbrella Reflector, Light Bulb, Soft Box Light Diffuser, Socket, Tripod Light Stand will create the appropriate light for videos and the Uni-Directional Mono Microphone is for sufficient sound.
