Beginning to Play Baseball on My Very First Team

My Students

Our students are incredible young people who love to learn new things. I teach P.E. to 450 second through fifth graders in a school district that has about 1300 students K-12. We are a Title 1 school, so most of our children come from modest means. Many of the children have never experienced team sports or other outdoor activities. I would like to change that by teaching all 450 students how to play baseball, and start a few teams of 15 kids per team to play each other in the spring. This would be an instructional type of league.

My Project

It is my desire to start some team sports at Whitaker Elementary. Buying these gloves will allow us to get kids playing baseball on their very first teams for intramural sports programs at school.

Our students need to experience team sports if our high school is to be competitive.

Right now, it is difficult for us to field a full team in some sports. Playing a team sport when they are young could turn this around. We want kids to play on a team that will instruct them in the fundamentals and keep it fun so they still want to play when they get to our high school. This will involve coach-pitch and a focus on hitting and catching. The players that are chosen for teams will have never played on a team before. We want this to be a positive first experience.
