Our students mostly come from our small, island city and opt into being "learners" when they do so. Families who choose our school are committed to project based learning and love the differentiated instruction we embed into our lessons. This philosophy extends into our facilitation of all core subjects and appeals to families looking for a more personalized education for their children.
My Project
My partner teacher and I are both new to our school this year. We are excited to collaborate, organize and develop our classroom libraries together. As we have looked through our current book selection, we have discovered that our libraries are in need of more early reader titles. These picture books and books with simple text help all learners to envision themselves as readers.
During our book shopping time, these books will provide our learners with the confidence that they can read independently.
Books at early reading levels, (Levels C and D) are highly controlled in the amount and type of words on each page. These books give learners an opportunity to see themselves as readers. This is a critical shift that happens in kindergarten, and can be nurtured successfully when the right type of books are available.
When it comes to reading time, it is critical that learners are given opportunities to work at individualized and differentiated reading levels with books they enjoy and love to read.
As we proceed in the school year, I want to make sure that all children are reading books that are developmentally appropriate and engaging. One of the greatest moments as a kindergarten teacher comes when children fall in love with books. When the perfect book is in the hands of a child at the right time, it is amazing to see how confidence and skills blossom!
