Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach a group of twenty-six first grade students in one of the cities with the highest crime rate in the nation. All the students at my school site receive free lunch. A full 97% of my school's student population is Hispanic, and most of them are first-generation in the United States. At least 15% of my students are newcomers to the country. School is one of the only places at which my students interact with someone who speaks academic English.
Living and attending school in a highly impoverished, urban setting, my students are not exposed to many educational experiences outside of the classroom.
Exposing my students to different types of learning while keeping them engaged and entertained is very important to me.
My Project
I am creating this project thinking ahead of our needs for next school year. In this paragraph you will find how each item will be used. I need a set of timers for students who are working independently to keep track of their own time. The "Rainbow Scratch Paper" will be used as an art activity. The birthday crowns are to be used to celebrate my students' birthdays. I am asking for a behavior chart (and cards) because the one we have has many plastic pieces missing. The stickers are to label books and also for our behavior chart cards. I need some binders to organize my teaching materials. Lastly, the window film will make a nice decoration to our classroom while also providing us with some privacy.
