My class consists of four year old students containing both boys and girls. My students come from varying backgrounds and family styles. My students have a wide variety of interests. They come to me with a large range of background knowledge and previous experiences that would benefit them at school. I make sure to provide them with experiences, knowledge, and skills that will help them all succeed. Since my students are so young, the time they spend with me is spent learning early skills for literacy, math, science, social skills, direction following, and motor development.
My students learn their letter names and sounds and many start to learn to read in my class. These books are research and best-practice based. The books start off with skills that are important for beginning reading such as the rhyming set and progress through the stages of early literacy such as beginning skills, sight words, and word families. Having this whole set will provide students with a standardized learning system that stays with the same format and teaching strategy throughout the series. The books are scaffolded to gradually release students from highly supported and basic reading skills to more independent and higher thinking.
