This project is for a dynamic group of 9th grade scholars in the vibrant New Orleans East. All my students come from low income households, are African-American, and are behind grade level (but quickly catching up!). My students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom, but they are resilient leaders and intent upon receiving the education they deserve. We need literature that serves as both mirrors and windows to help expand our growing minds.
Happy Black History Month! My wonderful 9th graders here in New Orleans East need books they can read with peers in order to explore Black History! This request will allow us to set up book clubs for the first time this year - a structure that will allow them to read, discuss and debate with each other in small groups organized by reading level. By supporting this project, my kids will be able to analyze rich texts that reveal beautiful aspects of their heritage. Thanks for validating the passions of our kids and helping them to become deeper and more independent thinkers.
