Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I school in a highly poverty-stricken area of New York. The students, predominantly Hispanic and black, are burdened with more responsibilities than can be imagined, yet they come to school each day and try to learn the lessons in front of them. The students' and their parents' lives are plagued with harsh realities of life and poverty, and many times, the task of putting food on the table has to take precedence over school. This hardship can cause a lack of focus and create stress that makes it nearly impossible to harness the students' abilities.
My Project
Many of my students are reading at a lower level this year, however, the classroom library does not have books to cater to their needs. When students do not have materials to nourish their minds, they regress. Each of the series that I am asking for are high interest reads with appropriate reading levels for the group that I have this year. This will encourage the students to read more and strengthen their comprehension skills. Each day, students will select the books they want to focus on and hopefully continue reading the entire series. These books, The Babysitter's Club and Boxcar Series, will challenge the lower level readers and promote their growth in reading.
