Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Our students live in Santa Paula, California, located about fifty miles north of Los Angeles. We are surrounded by the Los Padres National Forest and rich agricultural lands filled with commercial nurseries, avocado, and citrus orchards.
Many of our students are recent immigrants or children of immigrants, and although they live only ten miles from the Pacific Ocean, many have never been to the local beaches.
About eighty percent of our students are second language learners, with ninety-seven percent of them on the free or reduced lunch program.
In spite of these challenges, these students are bright, enthusiastic and eager to learn. Every morning they greet us with smiles and great expectations. Their parents are sometimes shy due to the language barrier, but all are eager for their children to do their best at school. Many of these parents work for the large farms and orchards, often working long shifts to support their children and provide for their future.
The principal, teachers, and supporting staff are dedicated to working as a team to provide the students with the academic and social skills needed for success in the 21st Century.
My Project
Everyone knows that children need about 60 minutes of outdoor play per day. The foam core dodgeballs we are requesting will help meet our goal of providing enjoyable exercise for our students.
Many students arrive early to school, so we have developed a before school recreation program, where students are invited to play dodgeball, volleyball and other active games.
Students who arrive early and have energy to burn, are invited to join one of our dedicated playground supervisors, who sets up these games for the early arrivals. Most mornings, over 40 students from 1st grade to 5th join in the fun. The students benefit by adding to their exercise for the day, as well being better prepared for the school day. The balls we need will replace the worn out ones and help us keep our morning recreation program going.
Students who exercise consistently do better in school and form healthy habits that will stay with them as they mature. Please help support our students' good health by providing these foam core dodgeballs.
