My students need to have access to a functioning audiometer in order for me to be able to test their hearing and meet the state mandated screening required by WA state law.
My classroom is a health office where I screen and monitor students for special education services. Each student needs to have a tone audiometry using a dependable audiometer. Mine is ancient, made in the early 80's and is described by the repairman as 'vintage'!! I have problems calibrating it now.
My 1330 kids in 9th to 12th grades are inner city kids with lots of energy, spunk and desire to make a good life in our West coast area.
Our High school has the highest numbers of graduates attending our State University within our 14 district high schools and yet we serve the lowest economic area. So, many of my students do well after HS.
We've had successes in debate and ultimate frisbee this year and our students are involved in a city wide support for teen jobs during the summer. Many of our students use these jobs as springboards and launching platforms for career interests and they WORK HARD!!! I am very proud of the way they advocate for themselves.
My Project
This audiometer will let me easily and rapidly test students referred by a teacher for concerns about hearing in the classroom. It will 'find' those who can't hear, moving them through the referral and treatment process with an audiologist who can provide hearing aides, suggest classroom strategies and accommodations for those with hearing challenges.
I want to improve the number of successes by finding, assessing and referring students with hearing losses so that they can make the most of their learning for the entire 4 years they attend. And so that they can be one of the successes I spoke about above and have opportunities for learning that was previously impossible for them due to a simple problem of not being able to hear.
I need a new modern machine to test my kids! This thirty year old equipment is not reliable and needs to be replaced. My students are required to undergo mandated screening for Health assessment and many others are referred by teachers and staff for identification of problems.
With this new hearing equipment, my students will be tested with reliable machines that are not 'as old as the hills', and make them portable to classrooms and screening sites in my building.
It will make testing more efficient since it will be maintainable and dependable, doing away with waits for repairs or borrowing one that works from another school.
Most importantly it will assure that students receive the screening they require for full and complete opportunity to learn in their classes because they have had help with a hearing problem.
